The Australian government recently announced stringent cybersecurity regulations aimed at protecting critical national infrastructure from increasingly complex cyber threats. These regulations mandate that organisations implement comprehensive security frameworks, conduct regular and thorough risk assessments, maintain detailed incident response protocols, and ensure compliance through periodic audits. Non-compliance could result in severe financial penalties and significant reputational damage.

X Faces Massive Cyber Attack, Causing Global Outages

On March 10, 2025, the social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, experienced a series of widespread outages that disrupted access for users across the globe. According to Musk, the disruptions were the result of a "massive cyberattack" targeting the platform. Posting on X, he stated, "We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources. Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved."

The attack’s scale and persistence led to speculation about its origins. Musk later suggested on Fox Business that IP addresses traced to "the Ukraine area" might be involved, though no concrete evidence has been publicly confirmed. Meanwhile, a pro-Palestinian hacktivist group called Dark Storm Team claimed responsibility via Telegram, asserting they launched a distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attack to overwhelm X’s servers. Experts, including Netblocks director Alp Toker, noted that the outage patterns were consistent with a DDoS attack rather than internal technical failures.

For users, the impact was significant—many encountered loading issues or error messages, with X intermittently inaccessible for hours. The platform has since enabled DDoS protections via Cloudflare, including CAPTCHAs for suspicious traffic. While the full scope and motive of the attack remain unclear, it underscores the growing challenges tech platforms face in an era of escalating cyber threats.
