The Power of First Impressions, Upskilling for Cybersecurity, and Staying Motivated in Your Job Search
Master First Impressions in Interviews, Enhance Your Cybersecurity Skills, and Keep Your Career Momentum Going
Welcome to the sixth edition of Career Compass by Avidity! 🚀 In this issue, we’re focusing on making a powerful first impression in interviews, upskilling in cybersecurity, and staying motivated when your job search seems challenging. Whether preparing for your next big interview, looking to break into cybersecurity, or simply aiming to stay motivated in your career journey, this edition has something for you.
Career Advice: How to Make a Strong First Impression in Interviews
The first few minutes of an interview can set the tone for your entire conversation. Here’s how you can make a memorable and positive first impression:
1. Dress the Part: Dressing appropriately for the interview shows you’re serious and professional. Research the company culture beforehand to ensure your attire meets their expectations.
Tip: If in doubt, lean towards business professional.
2. Start with Confidence: The first handshake (or virtual greeting) matters. Smile, offer a firm handshake (or acknowledge confidently online), and make eye contact with your interviewer. It demonstrates confidence and sets a positive tone.
3. Prepare Your Introduction: Be ready for the “Tell me about yourself” question. This is your chance to highlight your strengths, relevant experience, and why you’re excited about the role. Keep it concise and tailored to the job.
Hi, my name is [Your Name], and I have over five years of experience in cybersecurity. In my most recent role at [Company Name], I led a team responsible for mitigating security risks and implementing key security protocols, which resulted in a 20% reduction in data breaches. I’m enthusiastic about the opportunity to apply my risk assessment and security management skills to [Company Name] due to your innovative approach to cloud security, which aligns with my passion for developing cutting-edge security solutions.
4. Body Language Speaks Volumes: Non-verbal cues are just as important as what you say. Sit up straight, avoid fidgeting, and use gestures naturally to emphasise your points.
Making a strong first impression is all about being prepared, confident, and present from the very beginning. These tips will help you start your interviews off on the right foot.
Upskilling in Cybersecurity: Why Continuous Learning is Key
Cybersecurity is a field that’s constantly evolving, and staying ahead means committing to lifelong learning. Whether you’re just starting or looking to advance, upskilling is crucial. Here’s why:
1. The Threat Landscape is Always Changing: New threats and vulnerabilities emerge daily. Gaining certifications and training in the latest technologies, like AI-driven defence or cloud security, will keep your skills relevant.
2. Certifications Matter: Employers often seek candidates with up-to-date certifications. Start with foundational certifications like CompTIA Security+ or the Google Cybersecurity Certificate, and then progress to more advanced credentials such as CISSP or OSCP.
3. Real-World Experience Counts: In addition to formal education, hands-on experience is essential. Consider participating in Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions or contributing to open-source cybersecurity projects to hone your skills in real-world scenarios.
4. Soft Skills in High Demand: Communication, teamwork, and problem-solving are highly valued in cybersecurity roles. Building these skills alongside technical expertise will make you stand out to potential employers.
In cybersecurity, the learning never stops. Keep pushing yourself to stay informed and ahead of the curve!
Staying Motivated in Your Job Search: Tips for Overcoming Burnout
Job searching can be an emotional rollercoaster, and it’s easy to feel discouraged if you’re not seeing the results you hoped for. Here’s how to stay motivated and keep moving forward:
1. Set Manageable Goals: Break your job search into smaller tasks, such as sending out a set number of applications per week or contacting a specific number of connections. Achieving smaller wins can help you stay positive.
2. Celebrate Progress, Not Just Results: Don’t focus solely on the outcome. Celebrate the effort you’re putting in, whether crafting an excellent cover letter or successfully networking with a new contact.
3. Keep Learning: Use downtime in your job search to upskill. Take an online course, attend webinars, or work on side projects that can enhance your resume. This will fill gaps in your experience and keep you feeling productive.
4. Take Breaks When Needed: Job searching can be exhausting. Allow yourself time to recharge and avoid burnout by periodically stepping away from applications. Come back refreshed and ready to tackle the process with renewed energy
Remember, persistence pays off. Stay positive, celebrate small victories, and keep pushing towards your goal.
News Update: The Latest in Cybersecurity
The U.S. and Microsoft Take Down 107 Russian Cybercrime Domains
The U.S. government and Microsoft have taken down 107 domains linked to Russian cybercrime syndicates in a joint effort. These domains were used for phishing campaigns, fraud operations, and data theft schemes. This action is part of an ongoing crackdown on cyber threats that target individuals and organisations worldwide.
• Impact: This seizure significantly disrupts cybercriminals' ability to execute large-scale attacks. However, it reminds us to remain vigilant, as these groups often reestablish their operations using new domains.
• What You Can Do: Strengthen your security by using strong, unique passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication (MFA), and staying alert to phishing attempts. Cybercrime is a global threat, and taking proactive steps to protect your digital assets is essential.
Fortinet Critical Vulnerability Exploited in Ongoing Attacks
CISA recently revealed that attackers are actively exploiting a critical remote code execution (RCE) vulnerability in Fortinet’s FortiOS (CVE-2024-23113). This flaw allows unauthenticated threat actors to execute arbitrary code on unpatched systems, posing significant risks to organisations. U.S. federal agencies have been ordered to patch their systems by the end of October to mitigate this threat.
The Impact of AI on Cybersecurity in 2024
Norton’s cybersecurity researchers predict that AI will continue to shape the cybersecurity landscape in 2024. From the rise of AI-generated scams and deepfakes to the increased use of personal AI tools at work (referred to as BYOAI—Bring Your Own AI), integrating AI in everyday tasks could significantly increase the risks of data breaches and misinformation. While AI presents many opportunities for efficiency, it also opens new doors for cybercriminals.

Cybersecurity often involves two distinct approaches: offensive and defensive tactics, commonly represented by the Red Team and Blue Team. In my latest YouTube video, I break down what each team does, how they operate in cybersecurity, and why understanding both is essential for a well-rounded career.
